CNN writer Ed McLaughlin has taken the step and named Nas the greatest lyricist of all time. He compares him to greats like Jay Z, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Eminem and LL Cool J. One of his biggest arguments is that Nas has had 7 of his 9 albums go platinum without having any platinum singles. This means that fans want the entire package- which is what keeps artists alive in the industry of one-hit-wonders today. Nas is hesitant to take the title saying that. When asked where he fits in within history’s best MCs he said:
It’s wayyyyyy, way, way too early in our lives. It’s great to put a list together, but don’t take it too seriously because your list won’t matter 10 years from now or 15 years from now. It’ll be a different list.
In addition to his talent, Laughlin attributes much of Nas’ success to his ability to adapt his stories through the years. Nas wouldn’t say whether he would still be rapping in 20 years but did offer that rap is “always going to just be the youth expressing themselves over the sounds that move people in the best way.”
