Reports say that Jay Z has changed his name. Billboard editor Joe Levy announced via Twitter that Jayz has taken the hyphen out of his name, so it is now Jay Z.  Levy tweeted, Breaking: Jay Z has dropped the hyphen from his name, according to his label. I am not kidding. (Wish I was.) Copy editors: take note.  It looks like Jay didn’t just decide this recently. On his 2011 Watch the Throne album with Kanye, his name was credited as Jay Z. He also took the hyphen out of his name for his most recent album, Magna Carta Holy Grail.

Dr. Boyce Watkins (who currently works for my alma mater Syracuse University)  is not so pleased with Jay Z’s choice of words toward Harry Belafonte. The beef started last year when Harry Belafonte spoke out about black celebrities not doing enough to give back- specifically Mr. and Mrs. Carter. In Jigga’s new song ‘Nickels and Dimes’ he says, “I’m just tryna find some common ground ‘fore Mr. Belafonte come and chop a n**** down. Mr. Day O major fail, respect these youngins boy, it’s my time now. Hublot homie, two door homie you don’t know all the s*** I do for the homies.” Dr. Watkins found Jay Z’s comments disrespectful and believes that Mr. Belafonte’s challenge to Jay Z was appropriate. Throughout his letter he said, “I’m not sure why Jay-Z, an entertainer who can’t find much to talk about other than the last Bentley he bought, can’t look to a great man like Harry Belafonte for guidance on how to make himself something more than just another dude who can spit dope lyrics… , I dare say that if Harry Belafonte had the same attitude as Jay-Z, millions of lives would have been altered for the worse… Jay-Z has $500 million dollars in the bank and still allows white folks to scare him into remaining silent about nearly any political issue impacting the people he left behind in Marcy Projects… I hope Jay-Z will issue an apology to Harry Belafonte.  Were it not for the sacrifices of Belafonte and men of his generation, Jay-Z would still be”slingin” on the corner or rapping on the chitlin circuit.”
