Kanye West’s Yeezus tour is only one stop in and it’s already made several headlines including the appearance of a Jesus-lookalike. The tour is now in the news for the merchandise that’s being sold to fans. T-shirts with confederate flags and skulls are available for purchase at the show. Defenders of the images argue that Kanye is trying to reclaim a symbol that is synonymous with racism in American history. According to West’s creative director the controversial merchandise is a “collection of thoughts.”
Reverand Al Sharpton recently wrote a piece discussing the symbolism of the confederate flag saying “The Confederate flag symbolizes dehumanization, injustice and pain. It is a stark reminder of an era in our history that was defined by the abhorrent practice of slavery. And it is representative of a mentality that looked upon Blacks as inferiors who needed to remain in the shackles of subservience. If you don’t believe me, ask family members of those that were beaten, castrated and lynched under the guise of that Confederate flag. For a person to boastfully wave that flag in front of the White House is beyond reprehensible.”
Kanye has also commented on having White Jesus on his show and said, “We do plays all the time and people play Jesus. You know what’s awesome about Christianity is that we’re allowed to portray God. We’re allowed to draw an image of him, we’re allowed to make movies about him.” okay Kanye we see where you are coming from. Ye says he asked his pastor is this was cool and he was given the green light.
