First lady of Top Dawg Entertainment, SZA, has teamed up with her label mate Ab Soul for the remix to her track ‘Ice Moon’. The original appeared on her EP ‘S‘ which dropped earlier this year- and is the first in a three-part series. SZA is definitely making a name for herself in the R&B world. At 24 the Jersey native, who has been singing for a short time and was working in Sephora just last year, has managed to get two EPs under her belt and shares a label with heavy hitter Kendrick Lamar. SZA prides herself on working with progressive producers and even has plans to work with the 16 year old production prodigy from Jay Z’s MCHG, Wondagurl. She recently sat down with Consequence of Sound for an interview where she talked about everything from growing up in a conservative Muslim household to her awkward teen years to her musical inspiration.
It’s noted that she’s new in the game and music wasn’t always her first calling- but it’s the one that stuck. She said:
“I told my mom I wanted to go to Harvard Law School. Then I wanted to be Lisa Simpson, then a veterinarianI wanted to be a lot of things, a lot of different times.”
She’s sited a variety of artists as serving as an inspiration to her genre-defying sound but said that the core of her music is based on frustrations:
I definitely think my music is heavily based on frustrations… with myself, and just trying to figure out what the fuck is wrong with everyone in the world, and what’s wrong with me. Why can’t I figure it out? And why can’t everyone figure things out and stop being so weird? It’s like, self-loathing mixed with global frustrations.
Her previous projects See.SZA.Run and S are available for download and the second installment in her SZA series, Z, is expected to drop some time early next year. She described the new project saying:
Sonically, each song I truly believe has its own genre. It’s genre-less. It’s kind of literally just me, just a representation and presentation of me amongst incredible production and some vocals that… aren’t that bad.
