Fashion Designers Talk About How Not To Be Racist – There have been several racial profiling allegations against major retailers like Barneys and Macys in the past month or so and now some of the people behind these fashion retailers have decided to take some action. According to reports, representatives from Barneys, Macys, Bloomingdales, Saks Fifth Ave, and Lord & Taylor will be meeting in NYC on November 22 to discuss how to now be so racist. More specifically they’ll discuss racial profiling, loss prevention procedures and other store policies that could lead them to discriminate against customers on the basis of race. The meeting is being hosted by the Retail Council of New York State and the New York Metropolitan Retail Association.

Jonathan Martin Breaks Silence – Jonathan Martin has been pretty quiet in the weeks following his leaving the Miami Dolphins citing racial insensitivity and hazing from fellow teammate Ritchie Incognito. Martin had a nearly 7 hour long meeting with the Miami Dolphins that is investigating his hazing and bullying allegations. While he said that he will not discuss with the media what was talked about during the briefing he is saying that he looks forward to continuing his career in the league.

Oprah Talks About Old Racists – Oprah was in the UK recently to promote her film The Butler when she was very blunt about her thoughts on how to end racism. She first made it clear that we have evolved as a people from the Civil Rights Movement and the type of racism that was faced by African Americans, but also makes it clear that we have so much further to go. She said that films like ‘The Butler’ and ’12 Years A Slave’  allow “people to see where the root of the problem started. It allows people to see, “Oh, that’s where it all started, this is how far we’ve come, and now this is how much farther we need to go.”  She then went on to say how the problem could eventually be eradicated,  “Of course problem is not solved. You know, as long as people can be judged by the color of their skin, problem’s not solved…there are still generations of people, older people, who were born and bred and marinated in it, in that prejudice and racism, and they just have to die.”

14 Year Old PA Boy Tortured By Police? Over the weekend a picture of a 14 year old boy with graphic injuries to his face was circulating via social media along with a message from the mother. The boy’s mom claims that without reason he was handcuffed, tased in the face, tortured, had his nose broken and both eyes blackened at the hands of Tullytown, PA police officers. She also said they took him to the hospital without her consent and she was not allowed to see him. The message was urging people to help her in bringing the accused officers to justice. The police officers have a different account of the story though. They say that the boy was handcuffed due to a Walmart shop lifting call and placed in the back of a squad car from where he escaped. They say he led officers on a chase, which made them the use the taser after several warnings to stop. The District Attorney issued a statement saying that the boy was tasered from a distance in the shoulder and cheek before being taken to the hospital and treated. The DA also said that the case is not under investigation because when the boy talked to the juvenile probation representatives he said that none of the officers touched him.

Rap Genius Gets Sony/ATV Deal – Last week Rap Genius was one of more than 50 sites that received take down notices from the National Music Publishers Association because they did not have a publishing license for posting song lyrics. Rap Genius has made moves to fix this problem by signing a licensing deal with Sony/ATV. The CEO of Sony spoke about the partnership praising Rap Genius for its ability to allow songwriters and their fans to connect in a “new and exciting way”. One of the co-founders for Rap Genius said that other deals are in the works and that their relationships will only start and continue to grow stronger. Rap Genius is expanding their brand into poetry, rock and news. Sony ATV is the world’s largest music publisher but the problems is that a large majority of the songs on Rap Genius are not yet licensed. NMPA’s president said that the goal isn’t to shut down all of these sites but “We simply want those that are making money off lyrics to be business partners with the songwriters who created the content that is the basis of the sites.”  This is definetly a step in the right direction.
