The Grammys air tonight and this year the show will be much more than a music awards ceremony. During the performance of ‘Same Love’ by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, 34 couples will join in holy matrimony. The couples range from gay to straight, from old to young and biracial unions. The producer of the show said, “We’re serious about this” and the President of the National Academy of Recording said:
I expect that people with all kinds of opinions might voice them, and that’s healthy. We don’t need to stoop to the level of trying to find gimmicks and sensationalistic approaches to what we do.
Ryan Lewis’ own sister will marry her long time boyfriend during the show to which he said:
A night that is already tremendous for me, for the music but to have my sister get married and my family there watching it — that makes it a whole other level of amazing…[the weddings] will be in our minds the ultimate statement of equality, that all the couples are entitled to the same exact thing.
Queen Latifah will officiate the nuptials and Madonna will join the duo on stage. The dress rehearsal for the weddings took place yesterday where the couples practiced their positioning in the aisles where they will be. The couples won’t be on stage because the producer thought that it would be “exploitative” and didn’t want them to feel like they were in a “parade”.
The show will air tonight at 8PM on CBS!
