On Sunday night Queen Latifah presided over the marriages of 33 couples during Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ performances of  ‘Same Love’ at the Grammys. Latifah told the couples to exchange their vows and rings and concluded with “With the power vested in me by the state of California, I now pronounce you married couples!” In response to those who questioned the Queen’s authority to actually marry the couples she said:

I had to get sworn in as a commissioner for the state of California, so I’m not an ordained minister like I said, but I’m a commissioner. So you can call me to commish – Queen Commish!

The title only lasted until midnight the night of the ceremony, after that you would have to take the regular route to make your nuptials official. During a backstage interview she described how excited she was to have been a part of the ceremonies and said:

I look forward to the day when presiding over a historic wedding ceremony like this is just the norm…To me, it was special to all the couples we married today and I look forward to dashing off to go sign their marriage certificates. It’s awesome.
