The hip hop world went crazy last month when Macklemore and Ryan Lewis annihilated the rap category at the Grammys taking home four awards. Many were upset that Kendrick Lamar didn’t win and Macklemore took to the internet to show that he agreed with the masses. He posted a text he sent K.Dot on Instagram explaining how he thinks Lamar was “robbed” and that he should have won. While some appreciated Macklemore’s acknowledgment others thought the gesture was a little forced and unnecessary. Among those ‘others’ is Drake who sat down with Rolling Stone magazine and said how he really feels about the situation:
I was like, ‘You won. Why are you posting your text message? Just chill. Take your W, and if you feel you didn’t deserve it, go get better — make better music…It felt cheap. It didn’t feel genuine. Why do that? Why feel guilt? You think those guys would pay homage to you if they won?”
He went on to explain that racially charged or not- Macklemore won and that’s just the way it is.
This is how the world works: He made a brand of music that appealed to more people than me, Hov, Kanye and Kendrick. Whether people wanna say it’s racial, or whether it’s just the fact that he tapped into something we can’t tap into. That’s just how the cards fall. Own your shit.
Real rap, Drizzy.
