When Pharrell released the cover art for his upcoming album ‘GIRL’ it sparked a little controversy because of the fact there were no black women featured. The Oscar nominated artist sat down for an interview where he described the importance of black women in his life. He said,
“My life is filled with black women….Black women running my company; I’m married to a black woman, and my mom, who is a black woman, is a huge force in my business… There should be no misconceptions or anyone misconstruing anything when it comes to me and women. You should know me better than that. I’m all about diversity… All one has to do is look at the ‘Happy’ video. We don’t discriminate. Like, never be confused as to my love for a black woman. I have love for all kinds of women.”
He called his album ‘a love letter to all women’ and he also said the women next to him is black. He explained,
“Then they’re going to ask me do I not have an Indian woman on there or a Pakistani woman on there? But meanwhile, I do. She is African American and I feel sorry for her that people will look her dead in her face like she ain’t black but she is black.” He continued, “Has anybody forgotten that I’m black myself? I wake up every day and I wave the black flag. Everything that I’m doing. You know, this “Happy” song going #1. What is the guy that’s singing the song? What do you mean?”
There you have it. You can “GIRL” on March 3rd.
