A data and digital analyst, Matt Daniels, has done some research and put together a series of charts that list the rappers who have the most extensive vocabularies in the game. He used one of my favorite sites, Rap Genius, to analyze the artist’s lyrics and looked at the “number of unique words” used. He found that Aesop Rock came in at #1 andused the most number of unique words in his first 35,000 lyrics. Daniels had almost excluded Aesop Rock from his analysis because he thought he was not popular enough. Following Aesop Rock is GZA from Wu Tang then Kool Keith.
Several other members in Wu Tang made the list. RZA’s solo album is also in the top category, Ghostface Killah, and Killah Priest along with the whole Wu Tang Clan are in the top tier and also The Roots. Also making the list, slightly behind those in the top tier of those with “The Largest Vocabulary In Hip Hop” were Drake, Eminem, Tupac, Nas, Outkast, Common, Jadakiss, Raekwon, Wale, 50 Cent and Mobb Deep among others. I thought it was interesting what seems like all my favorite artists are right at the top. This data explains why I may like them so much. They are actually intellectual and saying things in their raps.
Some of the more recent artist like Kendrick Lamar were not included because of a lack of current data. Daniels commented on his findings saying, “While Lil Wayne has never been celebrated for the complexity of his word choices, I expected 2pac, Snoop, and Kanye to be well above average…It’s also worth noting that Drake, one of the most popular artists of late, is #83 on this list.”
