The US has extended their hand and offered to help in the search for the more than 200+ Nigerian girls still missing from the school abduction a couple of weeks ago. Social media has been on fire with #BringBackOurGirls talking for action from the US for this. As we know the Islamic militant group called the Boko Haram took the girls in the middle of the night from their school because they don’t want the girls getting a western education.

Secretary of State John Kerry offered to “provide expertise on intelligence, investigations and hostage negotiations” in an effort to locate the girls. He spoke with Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday and the help was accepted. It looks like the plan is to send military, intelligence and law enforcement advisors to Nigeria. They won’t be sending military force, just yet. Kerry continued, “We remain deeply concerned about the welfare of these young girls…And we want to provide whatever assistance in order to help for their safe return to their families… we’re going to do everything in our power to be able to be helpful.” The US aid will begin immediately and Kerry plans to meet with Obama to discuss other ways that the US Army can be of assistance.

According to new reports even more Nigerian girls have been kidnapped following the mass kidnapping that took place a couple of weeks ago.  On Sunday night 8 girls from a village in northeast Nigeria were abducted in the middle of the night. The girls were between the ages of 12 and 15. As we know these girls are being sold in marriage, prostitution and modern day slavery. Witnesses described the kidnappers as gunman who arrived in the village on two trucks and also took food and animals. Because the village is so small and communication so limited, it took several days for the news of the abductions to spread. Nigeria’s President has been under extreme fire for what was believed to be negligence and a lack of action on the government’s part to take the first set of abductions seriously.  On Monday the terrorist group leader announced that he planned to sell the girls and described his hate for Western education. He said,

“I abducted your girls. I will sell them in the market, by Allah… “There is a market for selling humans. Allah says I should sell. He commands me to sell. I will sell women. I sell women… Western education is sin…Girls you should go get married.”

We’ll see how U.S. involvement turns out and if it brings these girls back.
