I can only imagine what it would be like to have your dream pulled out right from under you after working your whole life to achieve it. This is the scenario former NBA Draft prospect, Baylor Center Isaiah Austin faced this past week. With only a few days before the NBA Draft, Austin was diagnosed with Marfan Syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects the bodies connective tissue. This unfortunate and untimely diagnosis, while saving Austin’s life, ultimately ended any hopes he had of one day playing in the NBA. With an uphill battle ahead of him, and the reality of a lost dream confronting him, the NBA stepped in to try to help the young prospect accomplish his dream in one way. During last night’s draft, NBA Commisioner Adam Silver took a brief moment to acknowledge Austin, and then proceeded to name him the first ever honarary draft pick of the NBA. Watch the beautiful moment for yourself below, as words can’t describe how genuine of a moment this was.
