Kanye West hosted Yeezy Season 5 as a part of New York Fashion Week. Earlier in the week rumors started swirling that Drake would be making an appearance and somehow collaborated with West on the line. This was because of invitations that were sent out that included West and Drake’s names. Attendees of the show, including GQ Magazine writer Jake Woolf, confirmed that Drake was not involved after all. But what did happen at the show was Kanye unveiled his new sneakers called the Yeezy Runner.
The models used in his previous show have been very diverse and this show was no different. Kanye casted a hijab-wearing model named Halima Aden. She’s 19 and born in a refugee camp in Kenya, Aden is a first-generation Somali-American, and is currently a freshman at Saint Cloud State University in Minnesota. She signed to IMG Models after making headlines for competing in hijab at the Miss Minnesota pageant last year. Aden became the first woman to wear her traditional Muslim headpiece for the entire competition, also opting to wear a burkini for the swimsuit round. This may be Kanye’s attempt at responding to Donald Trump’s recent immigration policies that are affecting the Muslim and immigrant community. Kanye was previously condemned by social media for meeting with Donald Trump. Seems like he’s not a fan of his policies.
